When nothing happens

You pasted a YouTube link and ChatGPT did nothing useful

Three different things happen when you paste a video URL, and only one of them is honest. The dangerous outcome is not the error message — it is the confident summary of a video nothing ever opened.

What is happening

Plain ChatGPT cannot open the link.

A YouTube URL is just text in the message box. On its own, ChatGPT has no way to play the video, hear it, or read the page. So one of three things happens, depending on your setup and the day.

It tells you it cannot. That is the honest outcome. It tries to browse and fails, or returns something thin and generic. Or — the one to actually worry about — it produces a detailed, confident summary built from the title, the URL slug and whatever it may have absorbed about that video in training. That output looks exactly like the real thing.

YouTube Conversation is a free ChatGPT plugin that closes the gap. It reads the video’s own timestamped transcript, and when it cannot, it says so — it is not permitted to answer from anything else.

How to catch the third case: ask it to quote a line and give the timestamp. Something working from a real transcript quotes and cites. Something working from the title hedges, paraphrases, or produces a timestamp that does not match anything when you open the video.

Which of the three you are hitting

They look different and they need different responses.

An explicit refusal or error. “I can’t access external links.” Annoying, but correct, and nothing is at risk. You now know you need something that can actually reach the video.

Nothing happens, or a vague non-answer. Usually a browsing attempt that did not land. Often it will describe what the video is “likely” about. The hedging words are the signal.

A detailed summary that sounds right. This is the failure worth knowing about. There is no error, no warning, and no way to tell from the text. The check is the one above: ask for a direct quote and a timestamp, then open the video at that second.

Before you blame the link.

Check the video itself is public and reachable — a private, removed, region-blocked or age-restricted video cannot be read by anything, and the honest answer in that case is that it cannot be read. If the video opens fine in your own browser, the problem is not the link.

What actually works

Something has to reach the video and bring back the words that were spoken. YouTube Conversation is a free ChatGPT plugin that does that: you paste the link and ask your question, and it works from the video’s own timestamped transcript. Every claim comes back with a timestamp you can click and check.

And the failure mode is different in the way that matters. It is not allowed to fall back to a transcript service, a search result, a summary site, or its own re-transcription of the audio. If it cannot read the real transcript, it tells you. An answer you get is an answer from the video.

The honest limit

If the video has no captions at all, nothing changes: there is no text to read, and the correct answer is to say so. A tool that returns a summary anyway is describing the title, the description, or its own guess — which is the problem you started with.
