Install YouTube Conversation in ChatGPT. Review its publisher, capabilities and setup requirements there. - Connect Chrome.
Use the ChatGPT desktop app with ChatGPT’s Chrome connection enabled. Follow the Chrome setup guide if this is your first time. - Choose a supported video.
Use a public YouTube video that is available in your Chrome session and has captions or a visible transcript. - Paste the URL and ask.
Select the installed plugin and send the video link with your question in the same message. The workflow should open the source automatically.

YouTube’s transcript guide shows how to find Show transcript in the description and jump to a moment by selecting a line. It is a useful way to check source availability if a video does not work.

YouTube Conversation retrieves the complete available timestamped transcript through the visible YouTube page in your Chrome session. ChatGPT can then explain, summarize and question the spoken material, with links back to relevant moments.
- Understand: “Explain the idea at 12:40 with a simpler example.”
- Check: “Which part is evidence, and which part is the speaker’s opinion?”
- Find: “Where does the speaker discuss the main limitation?”
- Apply: “Turn this framework into a checklist for my project.”
Follow-up questions use the same retrieved transcript. A timestamp helps you verify what was said; it does not prove the speaker’s claim is true. Checking a factual claim may require outside sources.
Spoken content in the available transcript. Silent diagrams, gestures and on-screen steps that nobody describes are outside this workflow. Private, removed, unavailable and transcript-free videos are unsupported.

A current ChatGPT plugin, with a separate Chrome connection.
OpenAI’s current plugin documentation describes plugins as packages of workflow capabilities, such as skills and connected apps. Availability and interface labels can vary by account, plan, workspace and supported surface.
Use the current YouTube Conversation listing. Older tutorials may show a different Plugin Store interface: OpenAI labels its March 2023 plugin announcement as outdated.

If you prefer a summary beside the YouTube player, a browser extension may suit that job. YouTube Conversation is for continuing the work in ChatGPT. Other tools can also offer follow-ups and timestamps; choose the workflow that fits your task.
If the plugin does not work
- I cannot find or install the plugin.
- Open the direct listing above and check the requirements shown for your account. In a managed workspace, plugin availability may depend on the administrator. Follow the options your ChatGPT interface shows; an old Plugin Store tutorial may not match it.
- ChatGPT cannot connect to Chrome.
- Open Chrome and check that ChatGPT’s Chrome connection is enabled. Follow the connection guide, then retry the same video and question.
- The transcript does not load.
- Open that exact video in Chrome and check whether its visible transcript is available. Retry once if the panel was temporarily loading. If captions are unavailable or access is blocked, choose another public captioned video; do not use an answer that invents the missing source.
- The answer includes a visual detail or a bad timestamp.
- Open the cited moment. Ask which transcript passage supports the detail. A silent visual action is outside the plugin’s source; an unsupported claim should be corrected or removed.
- I am using a phone or only the ChatGPT website.
- This plugin workflow currently requires ChatGPT desktop with Chrome connected. Saved website Projects remain available to open and export.
